Long search for candidates – Solution: Lena Schilling stands as a candidate for the Greens in the EU elections

Date:

What has been the subject of intense speculation in recent weeks has now been confirmed: climate activist Lena Schilling will stand as a candidate for the Greens in the European elections in June. The ‘Krone’ has a cryptic video in which party leader Werner Kogler demonstratively leafs through a book by Schilling (see above).

The 23-year-old Viennese worked for Fridays For Future and the Lobau protest camp, among others, and went to her first demonstration at the age of 13. Lena Schilling is currently studying political science, has been a columnist for “Krone” since last year and founded the youth council. She does not belong to any party, but is repeatedly attributed to the Greens. “We bet she will join the Green Party in January?” for example, was asked on the X platform.

Here you will see a contribution from Lena Schilling about the 2024 election year.

Schilling: “There is still a lot to be gained”
Despite her earlier statement that she did not want to become a politician, she is now actually standing as a candidate for direct elections to the European Parliament for this party. “It will be a year in which we must fight for democracy and what our future will look like,” Schilling recently wrote on Facebook. The challenges are great, but there is also ‘much to be gained’, he continues.

Meanwhile, Green Party leader Werner Kogler announced his own TikTok channel on Saturday where users could find news and updates (see video above). It remains to be seen whether Schilling will be seen there (more often) in the future.

Who else is participating?
Most of the top candidates from other parties are already known. For the ÖVP this is MP Reinhold Lopatka and for the SPÖ the head of the delegation in the EU Parliament, Andreas Schieder. The FPÖ nominated Harald Vilimsky again, the selection process for the NEOS is still ongoing. The favorite is Helmut Brandstätter, member of the National Council.

The European Parliament in Strasbourg and Brussels is elected every five years, this year from 6 to 9 June. The Austrian election date is expected to be Sunday, June 9.
