According to domestic policy journalist Ida Metzger, the Beer Party’s possible participation in the upcoming National Council elections could influence Austria’s political landscape. In an interview with Jürgen Winterleitner on krone.tv, the head of the domestic policy department of the “Kronen Zeitung” sees the beer party as a serious phenomenon on the political scene of Austria.
Beer Party chairman Dominik Wlazny, alias Marco Pogo, sees Metzger as an election offer, especially for new voters and very young voters: “He is a very sympathetic, authentic figure and did not grow up in any party apparatus.”
Started as a satirical project, the party now faces the challenge of being taken seriously and mobilizing sufficient votes. Above all, the credibility of the Beer Party employees is crucial. “Are they just lucky soldiers who think they can now shake up politics with funny or semi-funny speeches?”
Factual topics must be relevant
Because, unlike the federal presidential election campaign, the National Council election campaign needs more than just frontman Dominik Wlazny. “The National Council election campaign is not just Marco Pogo. There has to be a team behind it and that will depend on whether this will be a sustainable project or whether – if you succeed at all – it will be a one-hit wonder.” The elections for the National Council are about factual issues. “If he is invited for discussions, he must be very knowledgeable. If he starts to turn, he can become disillusioned very quickly.”
The mentioned step to participate in the elections has not yet been taken, as Wlazny aims to recruit 20,000 members and raise 1.2 million euros for the election campaign. Metzger’s professional assessment suggests the political potential is there, but success will depend on a number of factors beyond entertainment.
In the video above you can see which parties the Beer Party is mainly stealing votes from and for which party(s) the Beer Party’s participation in the National Council elections could be positive.
