In addition to increasing the facilities for learning the language, the Executive aims to create a more Basque extracurricular ecosystem, increasing the space for Basque in the digital environment, expanding the opportunities to work in Basque and the possibilities to create and consume content in Basque.
The new plan to revive Basque over the next ten years aims to increase its social use and increase facilities for learning and working in Basque.
The plan, approved by the Council of Government on Tuesday, is called “Aroa”, it is the new strategic framework for the revitalization and empowerment of the Basque Country and replaces the Action Plan for the Promotion of the Basque Country 2012-2022.
As explained by the Minister of Culture and Language Policy, Bingen Zupiria, it responds to the changes that society has experienced over the last ten years and aims to create, “in a multilingual context such as the current one, a community with active and empowered Basque speakers.”
The plan defines five main goals
The first is to increase and facilitate learning opportunities in Basque, regardless of the situation of citizens.
In addition, we will try to create a more Basque extracurricular ecosystem, so that young people learn and use Basque more and better, in addition to education, and ensure that Basque has a prominent place in leisure and sports.
Also expand the space of Basque in the digital environment and achieve greater communication possibilities in Basque through language technologies, increasing the possibilities for creating and consuming content in Basque in the digital environment.
The fourth objective is to increase the opportunities to work in Basque, both in the public and private socio-economic sphere, and to deepen the possibilities so that the young population who have learned Basque can continue to use this language in the working world.
Finally, the goal will be to expand the possibilities for creating and consuming content in Basque. As in the digital environment, the plan believes that in any other context it will be crucial to increase the means to create and distribute content in Basque and influence consumer activation.
Moreover, the document lays the foundation for revitalizing Basque, in collaboration with institutions and citizens, with agents in the Basque field.
