A local politician and tax official from the Upper Austrian ÖVP is said to have questioned hundreds of tax assessments. Political opponents as well as party members and family members were affected. The woman has now resigned from all positions.
In response to an APA investigation on Monday, the district party Ried im Innkreis said the woman had “already resigned from her role in the local party when the allegations emerged” and “withdrew from the city council of her own free will.”
The federal disciplinary authority concluded that the officer had committed a breach of his official duty. The woman, who according to the ÖVP is still a “simple party member”, must pay a fine of 2,800 euros. According to “Kurier”, the majority of the questions concerned family members – sometimes dozens of questions were asked per person – but also other people, including some municipal council colleagues.
FPÖ locates “ÖVP scandal”
FPÖ Secretary General Michael Schnedlitz sees an “ÖVP scandal that apparently needs to be covered up” and announced to the “Kurier” that parliamentary questions would be asked to Chancellor Karl Nehammer and Finance Minister Magnus Brunner (both ÖVP) and Justice Minister Alma Zadic (Greens).
