The COFAG-U committee will start in March and will examine support payments during the corona pandemic. Of central importance are the funds that René Benko’s companies received. Contrary to expectations, the media-shy real estate juggler will now apparently be available to provide MPs with information themselves.
According to “Oberösterreichische Nachrichten” and “Standard”, the founder of Signa Holding promised the committee leadership that he would answer the committee’s questions on April 4. He was originally scheduled to provide information in early March. The opposition suspects that Benko and entrepreneur Siegfried Wolf have benefited disproportionately from government support.
Presumably favoritism due to the ÖVP topic
In the U-Committee, which should specifically focus on “two class governance due to the favoritism of billionaires by ÖVP government members”, MPs are likely to question Benko about what role the government played in Signa’s purchase of the Leiner building on Mariahilfer Strasse in Vienna. The 1.1 million euros in Corona support for Benko’s Chalet N will probably also become a problem.
The fact that Benko wants to testify comes as something of a surprise, as the investor has avoided public appearances and media investigations since the collapse of his Signa empire.
