Sweden recently became the 32nd country to join the NATO military alliance. Austria has not yet made any attempts to become a member, mainly because of its neutrality. However, due to the uncertain global political situation, the population occasionally feels a desire to belong. Krone+ discussed with a representative of the national defense the conditions under which accession would be conceivable, what costs this would entail and what consequences you might personally experience.
In 1949, eleven countries, including the US, Canada, Great Britain and France, founded NATO as a defense against the Soviet Union. 74 years later, fear of the eastern giant is greater than ever before. Since its founding, 21 other countries have joined the military alliance. Many for the same reason: Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty. It states that an armed attack on a member state must be seen as an attack on NATO as a whole. The other members are then obliged to support and defend the attacked country.
