Working visit – Nehammer arrives at Macron in Paris

Date:

Chancellor Karl Nehammer (ÖVP) met with French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris early Thursday afternoon. He was received at the Elysée Palace in the city center. The geopolitical situation and topics will be discussed at the EU summit in mid-April.

The Chancellor also wants to discuss economic policy during his second visit to Paris in a few weeks. France is Austria’s fourth most important export market in the EU. Another topic of the working meeting is the Gaza war.

It should also be about the war in Ukraine. For example, Nehammer wants to bring other countries such as the BRICS countries on board. The European Union needs a new strategy, ‘but we have no one on our side.’ That is why Chancellor wanted to ask Macron about his trip to South America.

Not even about ground troops
Nehammer said he wanted to prevent any military escalation in Ukraine and again spoke out against sending ground troops, as Macron had proposed in late February. There is more agreement on the strategic direction of the European Union, such as the objectives and priorities for the next five years. This will be discussed during the EU summit on April 17 and 18.
