Carinthian Governor Peter Kaiser (SPÖ) is not in Klagenfurt this week, but in another important capital: Brussels, the headquarters of the EU. Since 1999, no Carinthian politician has had the opportunity to prepare a statement before the Committee of the Regions.
Only in January was Kaiser elected rapporteur on child protection at the Consultative Committee of the Regions (CoR) in Brussels. Now Kaiser is making a similar statement to the CoR, which has existed since 1994 and consists of more than 300 representatives from 200 European regions.
The goal: better development and expansion of integrated child protection systems in Europe. In concrete terms, this means that the protection and rights of our smallest and youngest fellow citizens must be improved and standardized across the EU.
Central questions include: How can children grow up safely and freely? What is needed to guarantee childcare across the board? What are the consequences of child poverty and how can it be prevented? To what extent can children’s needs be addressed across the EU?
Children, Emperor and Carinthia
This means that not only children are in the EU spotlight, but also Kaiser and Carinthia: Carinthian regional politicians are rarely nominated as rapporteurs on this topic. This honor was last bestowed upon the controversial Red veteran shortly before the turn of the millenniumAdam Unterrieder.
Kaiser’s plan to make Carinthia the “most child- and family-friendly region in Europe” may have helped him in this regard. “Children deserve the best that politicians at all levels can do for them. The European regions in particular are crucial because child protection is ultimately implemented and applied locally in educational and social institutions,” Kaiser said ahead of the plenary session that will decide his statement. It will then be forwarded as a recommendation to the EU Member States in the Council of the EU, the European Parliament and the European Commission.
