German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock has called for new EU sanctions against Iran (see video above). According to her, existing drones against Iranian drones should be expanded. “I hope that we as the EU can finally take this step together.”
These European Union sanctions are in place because the Iranian regime is supplying drones to the Kremlin for its war against Ukraine. The German Foreign Minister also announced on Tuesday that she would visit the Middle East. She will travel to Israel on Tuesday and talk about how a further escalation of the conflict with Iran can be prevented.
Advice on how to proceed
EU Foreign Ministers and Josep Borrell (representative of Foreign Affairs, note) will discuss the Iranian attacks on Israel and further responses via video conference on Tuesday. Austrian representative Alexander Schallenberg (ÖVP) expects a clear majority in favor of sanctions. The EU must “take a clear position: on the one hand, de-escalate, on the other hand, draw clear lines.”
The European Union has so far imposed sanctions on the country not only over Russia’s support for the war, but also over human rights abuses and the development of nuclear weapons. According to diplomats, there are now plans to deploy missiles and drones in the Middle East.
Schallenberg wants more sanctions
“I do not see why deliveries of missiles to allies (allies such as Hezbollah in Lebanon or Houthis in Yemen) are not covered by the sanctions regime. But our goal should be to prevent a wildfire,” Schallenberg said. He has already spoken on the phone to his counterparts in the region and called on Iran to exert influence over its allies.
The Israeli government must not allow itself to be provoked. The Iranian army attacked Israeli targets on Saturday with more than 300 missiles and drones. The Israeli army said it had repelled the attack. Allies include the US, Great Britain, France and Jordan.
