Vorarlberg Governor Markus Wallner calls for a rethink of security structures in the European Union. Austria also had to contribute, he said.
When it comes to security, the EU is in great need of action, Governor Markus Wallner (ÖVP) said on Tuesday in view of the upcoming European elections. “We are experiencing Russian imperialism. If we did not recognize this in time, it would be a big mistake,” he warned.
The question is how to protect EU citizens from threats – given current global armament programs. “The current committee period was all about the Green Deal. The next committee period will focus on defense,” he explained. Austria should also consider what contribution it can make despite its neutrality.
Beyond security policy, he recalled the challenges of regional policy at EU level in view of Europe Day, celebrated every year on May 9 for peace and unity in Europe. Vorarlberg has been a beneficiary so far, and it should continue to be so. “We must prevent Vorarlberg from becoming an additional payer.”
Deferment of financing
Wallner mainly fears a shift in financing towards Southern and Eastern Europe. “It will be an uphill battle for the regions. The money must flow not only to weaker regions, but also to Central Europe – for digitalization and innovation. You also have to take care of the draft horses,” he said.
So far, Vorarlberg has received more from the EU than it took in. Money flows into a wide variety of programs, such as those focused on equality and poverty reduction or to projects specifically designed for border areas. The Ländle’s export figures have also developed positively since joining the EU: from 2.8 to 14 billion euros.
