The President of the Government of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, has urged the other parties to “shift positions” on the Sahara, as the Spanish Government has already done, while making it clear that the Spanish character of Ceuta and Melilla is not up for discussion and Morocco has made that clear.
Before the plenary session of the Congress of Deputies, Sánchez again defended that the Moroccan autonomy plan for the Sahara it is “the most solid, credible and realistic basis” for resolving the conflict and that is how more and more countries see it, including France, the United States and Germany.
In that sense, “47 years should be enough to understand that we need to change our views,” the president insisted, addressing the rest of the groups who criticized the turn of the Spanish government, defending that what is sought is nothing else to promote dialogue and the achievement of a mutually acceptable solution between the parties, supported by the UN.
On the other hand, Sánchez has indicated that in his meeting with King Mohamed VI on April 7, he made it clear that Spain does not accept that “Ceuta and Melilla are considered occupied cities because they are Spanish territory.” “Spanish sovereignty over Ceuta and Melilla is beyond doubt, as it is in any other part of the national territory,” he stressed.
