The President of the Spanish government, Pedro Sánchez, has announced that Spain will be the next to recognize the Palestinian state the 28th of May. The announcement was made during the plenary session of the Congress of Deputies, fulfilling the promise that the Spanish government would proceed with the recognition of the Palestinian State. before the month of July.
The decision comes after weeks of contacts led by the Spanish state and Ireland to try gain support within the European Union (EU) with a view to achieving the two-state solution, at a height of the conflict after more than seven months of Israel’s military offensive against Gaza.
The Chief Executive explained that the decision was agreed between the two partners of the Spanish Government and reflects the sentiments of the majority of Spanish citizens.
After reaffirming his belief that the only possible solution to the conflict in the Middle East is the coexistence of two states, Israel and Palestine, he emphasized that Spain is going to make this recognition for three reasons: for peace, for justice and for cohesion.
“It is the right thing to do,” he emphasized before reporting that he has informed both the King and UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres of this decision; and the Presidents of the European Council and the European Commission, Charles Michel and Ursula von der Leyen, respectively.
He also highlighted the series of contacts he has had with other international leaders in recent months and the fact that in these days and in the coming weeks there will be other countries that will also recognize Palestine.
