Date:

Carlos García Berro requests an oral trial against Oihana Garmendia, Haimar Altuna and Oihana San Vicente from Sortu, and members of the defunct ETA Kai Saez from Egilaz, Antton López Ruiz and Felipe San Epifanio for organizing reception events for prisoners that were released between 2016 and 2020.

The Public Prosecution Service The National Court has requested fines of five years and seven months in prison for the six people prosecuted for membership of a criminal organization and for the persistent offense of glorifying terrorism for organizing welcome events for prisoners of the extinct ETA between 2016 and 2020.

According to a document made public on Thursday, prosecutor Carlos García Berro requested the opening of an oral trial against Oihana Garmendia, Haimar Altuna and Oihana San Vicente, from Sortu, and against the former members of ETA (they disappeared in 2011). . Kai Sáez of Egilaz, Antton López Ruiz and Felipe San Epifanio, for committing the aforementioned crimes.

In addition to the prison sentences, the Public Prosecutor’s Office requests the seizure of the devices used to organize these tributes, as well as the permanent closure of the magazine KaleraInfo and the website kalerakera.eus, which was provisionally closed in 2021, together with the closure of seven profiles from Facebook, five from Twitter and four YouTube channels that were allegedly used to commit the alleged crimes.

The Guardia Civil arrested Oihana San Vicente, Haimar Altuna, Antton López ‘Kubati’ and Oihana Garmendia in January 2020 during an operation ordered by the National Court. San Vicente and Altuna were political leaders of Sortu in Álava and Gipuzkoa when they were arrested, and Garmendia and López, members of Kalera Kalera. They were provisionally released that same day.

In March of the same year, they testified before the National Court and denied that there was any structure or organization behind the events that welcomed ETA prisoners upon their release from prison, emphasizing that they had participated in some events because of their relationship with certain prisoners. .

In January this year, the case gained new momentum when National Court judge Manuel García Castellón announced that he was investigating the Sortu chats that could contain “instructions” about ETA prisoners. However, the Public Prosecution Service was against extending the investigation phase with this investigation and forced García Castellón to close the investigation.

For example, last April García Castellón requested a trial against the six named people, after which the request from the Public Prosecutor’s Office arrived.
