In 201410 years ago, the dark blue of the popular European (PPE), the red of the socialists (S&D) and the light blue of the liberals (Renew Europe), along with some green accents (Greens, ALE) were sufficient to sketch the map of the 28 states after the European elections.
However, a decade later (2024)two new shades of blue come to the fore. They correspond to Identity and Democracy (ID card), a group to which the National Group of the French Marine Le Pen or the Austrian FPÖ belongs, and the Group of European Conservatives and Reformists (CRE), in which the Brothers of Italy of ultra Georgia Meloni or Vox are registered.
They are the colors of the to the far rightwhich, according to the preliminary results, has prevailed France, Austria, Italy, states in which the Popular and Socialists won respectively in 2014. To all these seats we must add the ten Fidesz seats Hungarian Viktor Orbán (at the moment they are not registered with any political family).
Almost one quarter of the votes (24.3%) of these elections have gone to the extreme right, a percentage that was barely 16% in 2014. Its evolution is upwards, since it was almost 22% (21.8%) in the previous elections in 2019.
Despite the blow from the extreme right, popular, social democrats, liberals and greens will manage to retain 63% of the votes in 2024. Ten years ago, as we already indicated, they had a large majority.
