The PSE-EE has confirmed that the mayor of Portugalete will be part of the next Basque government, as a “strongman” of the Socialists.
The PSE-EE has confirmed that Mikel Torres, the current mayor of Portugalete, will be one of the deputy lehendakaris of the new Basque government that will be formed by lehendakari Imanol Pradales. He will be the ‘strong man’ of the socialists in the Basque government in coalition with the PNV.
Torres was born in Portugalete in 1970. He has a degree in economics and business sciences from the University of the Basque Country. He also completed a financial master’s degree at the UPV and has been promoted twice in Economics.
He was director of employment, training and development of business projects at the Center for Business and Innovation (CEDEMI) and professor at the University of the Basque Country at the Faculty of Economics and Business of Sarriko (Bilbao).
In the political field, he started his career in the socialist youth at the age of 14. He has served in several leadership positions of the PSE-EE and since 2014 he has been general secretary of the Biscayan Socialists.
He joined the Municipal Corporation of Portugalete as a councilor in 1995. In 2008, he was first elected mayor of the city of Jarrillera and was re-elected in the next four municipal elections (2011, 2015, 2019 and 2023).
