National Council Chairman Wolfgang Sobotka will stay with his party: he will take over the chairmanship of the ÖVP Party Academy in October, as the Niederösterreichische Nachrichten reported on Thursday. Previously, the politician was one of the vice presidents.
The 68-year-old has been chairman of the National Council since December 2017. He previously worked as Minister of the Interior and Deputy Governor of Lower Austria. After studying history, cello and music education, he also worked as a teacher. His political career started in 1982 when he became a member of the Waidhofen municipal council.
The Lower Austrian will no longer participate in the National Council elections in the autumn. In the ÖVP party academy he now succeeds Bettina Rausch-Amon, who announced her retirement after seven years.
Stocker: “Perfectly suitable”
One of the first to congratulate is Christian Stocker, Secretary General of the ÖVP. “Anyone who knows Wolfgang Sobotka knows that he is perfect for this position. Not only is he someone who honestly and consistently stands up for his beliefs, he is also someone who is extremely artistic and intellectual,” he said in a broadcast on Thursday evening. The Springerschlössl will be able to benefit from Rausch-Amon’s achievements for a long time to come.
