Greens step up pressure – does the new ÖVP affair endanger the coalition?

Date:

The Court of Auditors will have campaign costs audited from 2019. Karl Nehammer was the responsible general secretary. He and his People’s Party remain relaxed, are insulting. The Greens are increasing the pressure.

The Court of Auditors places an unpleasant piece of paper on the turquoise table. The credibility of the annual report for 2019 is doubted and the party information is examined by an external accountant. That should happen this year, said Court of Auditors Margit Kraker on Ö1 yesterday.

“There is a lot wrong with the ÖVP”
Another heavy blow to the ÖVP. How much does that harm the state supporting party? “This affair is another indication of how much is wrong with the ÖVP,” political scientist Kathrin Stainer-Hämmerle told the “Krone”. Particularly problematic: “In the investigations and complaints of the opposition, the ÖVP sometimes argued with left-wing networks. The Court of Auditors cannot do that.”

The chancellor and his party remain calm
Chancellor Karl Nehammer, who announced transparency, could face political damage if the allegations prove true. In 2019, he was Secretary General responsible for the election campaigns. Yesterday he said: “In 2019 we did not exceed the upper limit, further tests will show that. We will fully cooperate and it is important that this review is carried out quickly.” The party also left. The infringements alleged by the Court were found to be unfounded.

With all matters, the question arises of how long the coalition partner will continue to watch the telenovela. Apparently until the end, says political scientist Stainer-Hämmerle. Both parties would have nothing to do with new elections in view of the polls. The Greens can also carry out their projects, especially in the climate sector. Club president Sigrid Maurer also sees a lot of joint work as anti-inflation and climate change. She told the Krone about the Court’s report: “It raises more questions than it answers.” It is good that the matter is being investigated. You see how important the new party law is.

“The new law is an important step”
This should come into effect in 2023. Then the Court of Auditors can also proactively search documents in the party headquarters if there are suspicions. Stainer-Hämmerle: “The law is an important step. It would be more important if the parties understood that they were facing new demands. It can no longer be said: ‘We behaved legally correct after all.’ And then they exploit every hole.”
