Summer is vacation time, also for refugees who have the right to travel abroad. But that also brings risks, especially if you travel to the home country from which you fled. One in seven protections is already withdrawn because of ‘travel’, but black people in Upper Austria want more clarity.
The regulation on the withdrawal of protection status for those entitled to asylum and those in need of subsidiary protection when travelling to their home country is too vague – which they are allowed to do in principle, for example to clarify property claims. “If there is even the slightest suspicion that a refugee is travelling to his home country with the intention of going on holiday, his protection status must be withdrawn as soon as possible,” ÖVP state manager Florian Hiegelsberger wants clarity from the future federal government.
The travel activities of asylum seekers are monitored, even if the authorities notice this; for example, if the border police discover it. But the withdrawal of protection status is done on a case-by-case basis. Last year, 2,860 cancellation procedures were initiated nationwide, 403 of which were due to travel movements. Russia was the most affected with 100, followed by Syria (94) and Afghanistan (76). Eight stateless refugees also risked their official asylum status by travelling.
