According to Imanol Pradales, this “great pact” should include the recognition “of the national reality” and be based on the Concert model in order to “grow in self-governance, coexistence and well-being”.
The lehendakari Imanol Pradales has called for being “brave” and agreeing on a “great bilateral political pact” between Euskadi and the Spanish state which includes the recognition ‘of national realities’ and is based on the Economic Concert model in order to be able to ‘grow in self-governance, coexistence and well-being’.
In his speech at Forum Europa Tribuna Euskadi, the Lehendakari stressed the idea of bilaterality and assured that this relationship between Euskadi and the state is based ‘on mutual recognition’. “Neither side can impose its will on the other. It underlines the need for dialogue, negotiation and reaching an agreement for mutual benefit”, he stated.
He has expressed his concern that during the debate on the financing of Catalonia, “dishonest, unfounded and ill-intentioned messages are being heard that attempt to undermine the cornerstone and unique character of Basque self-government, the Economic Agreement.
As for this “grand pact” to be achieved, it has a threefold objective: to guarantee and renew self-government reaches; complete the Statute of Gernika in its entirety and reach a new legal agreement for the future ‘which also includes the competencies which help us respond to the new needs and rights that Basque society brings with it”.
In this sense, he recalled the steps that must be followed to make this agreement a reality: negotiations and approval both in Euskadi and with the State, with the greatest possible consensus, and then ratification in a referendum by the Basque citizens.
