Although CDU parliamentary group leader Friedrich Merz had been reluctant to cooperate with the Sahra Wagenknecht alliance until recently, he is now apparently prepared to hold exploratory talks with the new movement and the SPD in Thuringia. About three weeks ago, the Alternative for Germany won the state elections, but no other party wants to govern with it.
The CDU state board gave the green light for exploratory talks at a meeting on Monday, as announced by Thuringian CDU leader Mario Voigt in Oberhof. The plan is to start the talks next week. They also want to explore “what such a cooperation could look like,” Voigt said.
The CDU, BSW and SPD together have only 44 of the 88 seats in the state parliament and would have to rely on the left’s behaviour to pass the law.
SPD: “We need stability for our country”
The SPD in Brandenburg, where elections took place on Sunday, does not want to let it take as long as in Thuringia. The re-elected Prime Minister Dietmar Woidke (SPD) wants to start exploratory talks with the BSW and CDU quickly. “We need continued political stability for our country,” Woidke said in Berlin on Monday. The CDU, however, gave a rejection. It also accused the SPD politician of using his strategy to strengthen the AfD.
CDU is preparing “for all scenarios”.
The second-placed AfD also claimed the government, but no one wants to form a coalition with them. Otherwise, only a coalition of SPD and BSW would have its own majority in the future four-party parliament. “A majority government is only possible between the SPD and BSW. In this respect, we are preparing for all scenarios, including the role of the opposition,” says CDU state leader Jan Redmann, who wants to remain in power despite a historically bad election result.
