US presidential candidate Donald Trump has spoken out in favor of an Israeli attack on Iranian nuclear facilities. When US President Joe Biden was asked about this, “the answer should have been: deal with nuclear weapons first and worry about the rest later,” the Republican said at a campaign rally in North Carolina.
Trump referred to Biden’s response to the possibility of an Israeli attack on nuclear facilities in Iran. Asked Wednesday whether he would support such action by Israel, Biden said: “The answer is no. We will discuss with the Israelis what they will do.” All G7 countries believe that Israel has the right to respond to the Iranian missile attack. “But the response must be proportionate,” said the Democratic US president.
Trump said in response to a question from an attendee at his campaign appearance in Fayetteville: “You asked him, ‘What do you think about Iran, would you attack Iran?’ And he says, ‘As long as they don’t attack the nuclear stuff.’” That was wrong of Biden, the former head of state said.
‘Shouldn’t you hit that? I mean, it’s the biggest risk we have: nuclear weapons,” Trump continued. “If they want to do it, they will do it,” he added, referring to Israel. “But we’ll find out what their plans are.”
Iran carried out a massive missile attack on Israel on Tuesday evening, the second in six months. According to the Israeli military, many of the approximately 200 projectiles fired by Iran were intercepted.
Tehran responded to the Israeli military offensive in southern Lebanon against the allied Hezbollah militia and the assassination of its leader Hassan Nasrallah. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said at the time that Iran had “made a big mistake” with the missile attack and would “pay for it.”
Former President Trump has so far remained remarkably silent about the recent escalation in the Middle East. Early this week, he issued a sharp statement alone, blaming Biden and his Vice President Kamala Harris for escalating tensions.
