Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris has released a medical report. With the certificate confirming her ‘excellent health’, she wants to score points compared to her competitor Donald Trump. The Republican, who is 20 years his senior, does not share such detailed information about his condition.
The 59-year-old has “the physical and mental resilience to successfully fulfill the duties of the presidency,” her doctor Joshua Simmons said in the report published Saturday.
Harris suffers from allergies and hives
The results of a physical examination in April were “unremarkable.” The vice president suffers only from seasonal allergies and hives, which are treated with over-the-counter and prescription medications. Harris is also mildly nearsighted and wears contact lenses, her doctor explained. She is a non-smoker, drinks alcohol only in moderation and leads an active lifestyle.
With the publication of the report a few weeks before the American presidential elections, Harris wants to bring the subject of age and health of the candidates back into the election campaign. The vice president hopes to spark a debate about the suitability of Trump, who is nearly two decades older than her, her campaign team said.
The fitness of the president is no longer an election issue
Trump has become the oldest presidential candidate in American history since US President Joe Biden withdrew from the race for the White House. Before Biden declared in July that he would no longer run for office, debates about the 81-year-old’s physical and mental fitness had determined the election campaign. Since it became clear that Harris will face Trump in November, the subject has hardly played a role in the media.
A few hours after the report’s publication, Harris’ spokesman Ian Sams directly called on Trump to also release information about his health. “What is he hiding?” Sam asked.
Trump’s doctor only makes vague statements
A New York Times article recently criticized the fact that Trump – unlike Biden – has never revealed detailed information about his health. In 2023, Trump released a report from his former White House doctor that found him to be in “excellent” health. However, no details were given. Another article in the New York Times also pointed out that Trump’s speeches have become increasingly “long,” “confusing” and “vulgar” lately.
On Saturday, Trump’s campaign team republished a statement from his former personal physician Ronny Jackson, which had already been published after the assassination attempt in July. Jackson, who is now a member of Congress, said Trump was doing “extremely well” and was recovering “quickly” from his ear injury.
Trump’s campaign team also redistributed a statement from another doctor who examined Trump in September 2023. Doctor Bruce Aronwald had declared Trump to be in “excellent” health. However, he provided few details and provided no information about what tests he subjected Trump to during the investigation.
Trump’s campaign team: ‘more active’ than any politician
Trump’s campaign team also said Trump had an “extremely busy” schedule and was “more active” in the election campaign than any politician before him. Harris is taking fewer appointments because she apparently doesn’t have Trump’s “stamina,” Trump’s team claimed. She is therefore “completely unfit” to become US president.
