While possible coalitions are still being considered in Vienna, at least one thing is certain: the Austrian budget committee will continue to be led by a Carinthian.
It will probably take some time before Austria has a new government. The personnel data for the future departments or committees have therefore not yet been recorded. With a few exceptions: One of these is the Committee on Budgets – one of the most powerful committees in our country.
To prevent everything from coming to a standstill until the government is formed, the four most important committees will be formed on Thursday: the incompatibility committee, the immunity committee, the rules of procedure and the budget committee. The latter will remain in Carinthian hands until further notice.
Leachtaler remains the country’s second most powerful financial politician
The budget committee consists of 23 members, seven of whom come from the ÖVP. And just as in the past legislature, the Carinthian Gabriel Obernosterer will continue to hold the chairman position. “I am of course very honored by this, especially in the transition phase, which will certainly not be easy,” said the Lesachtaler in the “Krone” interview: “These five-party agreements show that the work in the past was not bad! ”
And the fact that Obernosterer retains his position as chairman not only makes him Austria’s second most important financial politician. As during the Corona pandemic, all submitted applications – including those from the business, education, environment, etc. sectors – must go through the Budget Committee. Until there is a new government.
In principle, parties are entitled to a certain number of committee chairmen, depending on the election results. Whether Obernosterer will ultimately retain this powerful position even after a new government is sworn in remains to be seen. Experience shows that government parties share the chair positions of the most important committees; and things are looking good for the ÖVP at the moment.
