Controversial FPÖ politician Walter Rosenkranz was elected the first chairman of the National Council on Thursday afternoon. However, in the vote at the opening meeting of the National Council, he received only 100 of the 162 valid votes. That corresponds to 61.7 percent.
Twenty elected representatives voted invalid and one abstained from casting a vote. Rosenkranz managed to obtain 100 of the valid votes, meaning he received 43 from parties other than the FPÖ.
However, Rosenkranz’s result is clearly below that of Wolfgang Sobotka five years ago (88 percent), but above that of Sobotka’s first appearance (61.3).
26 votes for Hofer
26 votes went to the previous third president, Norbert Hofer, who was no longer nominated by the Freedom Party but was instead sent to Burgenland as the top candidate.
FPÖ club leader Herbert Kickl said in the election debate that it was not about habits, but about taking the will of the voters into account. His group will do the same by supporting the candidates for the Second and Third President.
Peter Haubner and Doris Bures have been nominated for the positions of second president and third president, respectively.
