In view of the tense situation in the Middle East, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has announced that he wants to promote the normalization of his country’s relations with other Arab countries. But the obstacles could hardly be greater.
Netanyahu aims to “continue the process that I started several years ago with the historic signing of the Abraham Accords to achieve peace with other Arab countries,” Netanyahu said Monday evening at the Israeli parliament in Jerusalem.
Netanyahu accused Iran of developing a “stockpile” of nuclear bombs aimed at destroying Israel. The nuclear bomb stockpile Iran is pursuing is “equipped with long-range missiles, intercontinental ballistic missiles, which Iran is trying to develop,” Netanyahu continued.
Netanyahu takes aim at Iran
Tehran could “threaten the entire world anywhere.” Halting Iran’s nuclear program is therefore “at the top of our considerations,” Netanyahu added, without providing further details.
Netanyahu blamed the leadership in Tehran for massively fueling the escalation of violence in the Middle East. The ‘fanatical axis of evil’ led by Iran is trying to ‘take control of our region by force’.
He added that Israel was the “real obstacle in Iran’s path.” “According to Iranian logic, many countries will benefit if Israel falls. The entire Middle East will fall into his hands.”
Iran has always denied that it wants to produce nuclear weapons. According to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Iran is the only non-nuclear weapon state that has enriched 60 percent uranium and is building up large uranium reserves. The country is now on track to enrich uranium to the 90 percent level needed for nuclear weapons. Nuclear power plants only need uranium enriched to 3.67 percent.
Trump canceled the nuclear deal
The US, France, Britain, Germany, Russia and China signed a nuclear deal with Iran in 2015. It was intended to prevent Tehran from developing nuclear weapons. In 2018, the US under then-president Donald Trump unilaterally withdrew from the agreement. As a result, Iran gradually stopped fulfilling its obligations. Talks about reviving the agreement remained inconclusive.
In addition to expanding its nuclear activities, Tehran has sharply scaled back IAEA on-site inspections. Surveillance cameras were turned off and the accreditation of nuclear inspectors was revoked.
Iran heads the so-called ‘Axis of Resistance’, an anti-Israel group that includes the pro-Iranian Hezbollah in Lebanon, the radical Islamic Palestinian organization Hamas in the Gaza Strip and the Houthi militia in Yemen. Their stated goal is the destruction of Israel.
Under the US-brokered Abraham Accords, several Arab countries had established relations with Israel, including Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, Morocco and Sudan.
