Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko has called for a draw in the war in Ukraine. “Ukraine will not win on the battlefield. The Ukrainians see this and so does the West. So you have to move, come to an agreement,” he said.
“If it has to be done right away, it could be a draw. I will say this in sports language,” he told Belarusian state news agency Belta. However, the politician did not explain how this would be achieved. Shortly before the war started in 2022, there were Russian-Ukrainian talks and the Ukrainian government agreed to a neutral status.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, who was in Minsk, sees it differently. A draw does not protect the interests of everyone involved. He repeated well-known demands that Ukraine renounce four territories and NATO membership and undergo so-called denazification. The Kremlin understands that this means the deployment of a government loyal to Russia in Kiev.
Troops advance in the east
Russian authorities have so far declared the Crimean peninsula and four areas in southeastern Ukraine their own. Russian troops are currently advancing in the east of the country. On Thursday, the Ministry of Defense reported that it had captured another village. Before the war started, fewer than 500 people lived there.
For Russian leader Vladimir Putin, the Donbass region is a “priority”. The next important destination is the industrial city of Pokrovsk. About 12,000 people are still waiting there, although about 80 percent of the infrastructure has already been destroyed. The city has been under fire for some time. Individual streets were cordoned off to build defenses.
