US presidential candidate Donald Trump has once again caused a stir with a comment during a campaign event. He will protect women, “whether they like it or not.” His advisers had previously advised him not to say that because it would be ‘inappropriate’.
There have been several allegations of sexual abuse against Trump. Last year, a New York court ruled that he had assaulted American author Jean Carroll in a luxury department store in New York in 1996, sexually assaulted her and later defamed her. During the 2016 presidential campaign, a video of Trump’s vulgar comments about women also made headlines. This stated, among other things, that they had to be grabbed between the legs.
Criticism of the Republican’s rhetoric is now coming from US Vice President Kamala Harris, but also from within her own ranks. Women can make decisions about their own lives and their own bodies, Harris said, for example. “I find it very insulting to women.”
Team: “Help for families”
“This masculinity thing” makes women uncomfortable, said former presidential candidate Nikki Haley. “Women will vote. They are interested in how people talk to them (…).”
Trump’s campaign team responded evasively. “Women deserve a president who will secure our country’s borders, drive violent criminals from our neighborhoods and build an economy that helps our families thrive,” they said in a statement.
Trump’s running mate JD Vance came under fire this summer for his statements about childless women. Leading Democratic politicians are ‘childless cat ladies,’ the father of three said in 2021.
Next Tuesday’s elections will come down to a neck-and-neck race between Harris and Trump.
