Fighter jet dispute – Poland: “Have their own defense needs”

Date:

EU and NATO member Poland is one of the most committed political and military supporters of Ukraine, which is under attack by Russia. Poland has also taken in almost a million refugees from its neighboring country. But now there is a dispute between Kiev and Warsaw over fighter jets.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky recently complained that Poland was delaying the delivery of promised MiG-29 fighter jets to his country. Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski then made it clear: “We have our own defense needs.”

“Poland is also a frontline state”
Ukraine must understand that Poland, as a “frontline state”, must also deter Russian President Vladimir Putin, Sikorski told Polsat News on Saturday. According to him, the cabinet in Warsaw has made a proposal for a defense loan in connection with military aid to Ukraine. Sikorski argued that it could have been done this way from the start: Ukraine could buy on credit from Polish arms factories and pay back the money during reconstruction.

Judging from media reports, the proposal is unlikely to be well received in Kiev. Zelenskyy also recently criticized Poland for not wanting to shoot down Russian missiles over Ukraine. Warsaw points out that such a step would require a joint NATO decision.
