Israel has now officially informed the United Nations about the implementation of the agreed work ban on the Palestinian aid organization UNRWA. This was announced by Israeli UN Ambassador Danny Danon on the X platform. “The State of Israel will continue to cooperate with humanitarian organizations, but not with organizations that promote terrorism against us,” he wrote.
Danon stressed that the UN has done nothing to rectify the situation, despite the fact that Israel has provided “overwhelming evidence demonstrating Hamas’s infiltration of UNRWA.” He included a copy of the letter from the Foreign Ministry in Jerusalem with his mail. Accordingly, the legislation will come into force after a period of three months.
Operations in Palestinian areas are no longer possible
Israel accuses the UN Palestine Relief Agency of participating in terrorist activities on October 7. Last Monday, the Israeli parliament approved a controversial bill banning the organization from operating on Israeli soil. This means that the organization can hardly continue its activities in the Palestinian territories because Israel controls the border crossings. This move had raised international concerns about the humanitarian situation of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. The UN Security Council had called on Israel to reverse UNRWA’s work ban.
UN Ambassador: “There is no justification”
The UN Security Council said in a unanimous statement that any interruption or suspension of UNRWA’s work would have serious humanitarian consequences for millions of Palestinian refugees. Britain’s UN Ambassador Barbara Woodward said: “The allegations against UNRWA staff earlier this year have been fully investigated. There is no justification for severing relations with UNRWA.”
