Tyrol’s deputy governor, Georg Dornauer (SPÖ), may hope for an end to the weapons ban against him. This was imposed on him in 2019 for leaving his hunting rifle with attached magazine with an open window at Innsbruck airport when he flew to Burgenland’s SPÖ regional leader Hans-Peter Doskozil.
Security officers discovered the weapon of then opposition politician Dornauer. The district administration issued an indefinite weapons ban, which was subsequently upheld by the state administrative court. This also involved the loss of the Tyrolean hunting card and the confiscation of his weapon.
Take up the hobby again, but no longer as a hunt leader
Now Dornauer hoped that the weapons ban would soon be a thing of the past. According to media reports, he now wants to apply to have the decision revoked after a period of five years has passed since his “never-ending accident, which I deeply regret.” He was also optimistic that he would soon be able to “pursue his modest hobby again.” But he does not want to return as hunt leader in Sellrain: “I don’t want to push myself to the top.” Besides, he doesn’t have enough time to go hunting anyway.
Five years ago, the judge found a gross violation of due care
The leader of the Tyrolean SPÖ state party apologized at the time and assured that “such storage of the weapon was neither intentional on my part nor in accordance with my long-standing hunting practice.” The day before he had put the shotgun in the backseat of his car because he wanted to drive to the station. As it started to rain, he stopped hunting and went to the office instead.
In the evening he took part in the Hubertus celebration in his home community of Sellrain. The judge found gross negligence and confirmed the weapons ban.
