Rejection of Trump and co – Borrell: Peace is only possible with revaluation

Date:

EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said during his visit to Ukraine that it does not matter how the war ends. “Peace, to be a peace and not just a ceasefire, must be just and lasting,” the politician said on Sunday.

This would require accountability from those responsible and economic reconstruction. “This is a warning to those who say this war must end and that is why we must end it as soon as possible, no matter what,” Borrell said.

With this statement he apparently targeted Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and future American President Donald Trump. Trump had assured during the election campaign that he could end the war within 24 hours, possibly before taking office on January 20. However, he has not yet said how he plans to achieve this.

Orbán had proposed a ceasefire before the peace negotiations. This would stop dying. “If you talk too much about a peace solution, you reduce the chance of a ceasefire,” the Hungarian is convinced.

According to Borrell, there must be Russian compensation and punishment for war crimes. For example, approximately $300 billion in Russian sovereign wealth funds frozen by the West could be used for people “who suffered from the destruction caused by the Russian invasion.”

This puts him in line with the Ukrainian president. Volodymyr Zelenskyy, for example, demands that the prosecution of war crimes be included in any peace treaty (see video above).

Borrell held talks in Kiev on Saturday and on Sunday the outgoing EU foreign policy chief visited the village of Jahidne, which was occupied at the start of the 2022 war. At the time, 367 people were held captive by the Russian occupiers for almost a month in a 200 square meter school basement. Eleven of them died.
