The hunting photo published on Monday in the Kronen Zeitung with René Benko and the Tyrolean SPÖ leader Georg Dornauer is causing heated discussions nationwide. Although Dornauer’s political future is uncertain, he has been ridiculed on social media for his appearance.
The Dornauer case was also reported on Monday in “ZiB 2” – including a swipe from ORF host Armin Wolf. “Today, November 11, at 11.11 am the fair started. Today I’m going as a hunter – without shooting of course. “The hat isn’t mine,” said Wolf, putting on a hunter’s hat.
Guessing Dornauer’s hat
Wolf was referring to Dornauer’s strange statement. He famously claimed that he had not shot himself while hunting, even though Dornauer is wearing a “prey break” hat in the photo. In hunting circles this is generally used to identify the shooter. But: the hat (he was wearing) was probably not his hat at all. At least Dornauer claims he put on a different hat.
Praise and criticism of Wolf’s hat use
Although some users found the ORF presenter’s contribution funny, there were also some critical voices. “Wolf complains about trolls on Twitter, even though he himself trolls ORF!” wrote one outraged user.
Another user wrote: “In the past there would have been dozens of events at ÖVP or FPÖ where Wolf could have made such jokes. He clearly didn’t have the courage to do that. The SPÖ doesn’t care anyway. This is how the fourth estate works in the state.”
Comedian like Dornauer: Video becomes a hit on the Internet
A short video by comedian Xaver Schumacher has also become a hit online. In it he parodied Dornauer and explained what actually happened during the hunting trip (beware, satire!).

“I was in the woods in Styria – looking for affordable housing for our voters. At that moment a man came up to me whom I have never seen in my life: René Benko. He was also looking for affordable housing. As I am about to sing the Internationale for René, a deer jumps out of the bushes, sees us, runs towards us and immediately falls dead. Maybe out of shock that he saw both of us. The deer was probably an old soci, a red deer.”
Dornau ‘victim’ of hackers
The deer’s blow loosened a pine branch above the top of a tree and fell directly into his hat. “Of course, I immediately ran to the deer to take resuscitation measures; I performed the so-called antler pressure massage.” When he finally knelt in front of the animal, the sensor of a wildlife photo system suddenly went off and took pictures of him and Benko. This system was most likely pre-hacked by Antifa – which is why the image was subsequently passed on to the media.
