US President Joe Biden has allowed Ukraine to use longer-range US weapons against targets deep in Russian territory. The previous restrictions have been lifted, insiders told Reuters news agency.
They gave no details other than to say they were ATACMS missiles. These have a range of 300 kilometers. A first such attack is planned in the coming days.
The New York Times newspaper reported on Sunday that the missiles would initially be used against Russian and North Korean forces in the Kursk region. The Ukrainian army uses the weapons to defend itself.
Here you can see an overview of the current battles.
Response to North Korean soldiers
It is a response to the deployment of North Korean soldiers on the Russian side. This move by the Moscow government caused concern in both the US and Ukraine. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has been demanding for months that US weapons with longer range be released for attacks deep into Russia. The Kremlin spoke of an escalation.
It is controversial how great the impact of the new weapons actually is on the course of the war. The Ukrainian army has repeatedly lost ground recently. The new regulation could possibly strengthen the negotiating position in possible ceasefire negotiations.
It is unclear whether Trump will continue the arrangement. Some prominent members of his Republican Party had called for a relaxation of the requirements.
