A chat – Macron eagerly shakes hands with the Putin diplomat

Date:

Many are outraged: a video has emerged online of French President Emmanuel Macron shaking hands with, of all people, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. Location: The G20 summit in the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro…

The French head of state takes the podium during the photo session on the sidelines of the summit of the twenty most important industrialized and emerging countries. The summit participants had already lined up in three rows in front of the camera in front of Sugarloaf Mountain. Suddenly, Macron approaches the Kremlin’s chief diplomat and extends his hand. Lavrov returns the kind gesture. The two exchange a few sentences, content: unknown. Then Macron continues.

The (still) sitting American President Joe Biden, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his Italian colleague Giorgia Meloni stayed away from the lightning storm. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova complained that leaders of Western countries had deliberately avoided having their photos taken with Lavrov several times. It used to be a circus, she complained. An attempt was even made to hold the summit ceremony at night – before Lavrov’s arrival.

Give Kremlin representatives a big head start
The accusations of the blonde, strong Russian are not unfounded. The last traditional ‘family photo’ as part of a G20 summit was taken in Italy in 2021. Since then, the heads of governments of Western countries no longer wanted to be photographed with representatives of the Kremlin because of the brutal Russian attack on Ukraine.
