Tensions in the region – Iran wants to limit its own uranium production

Date:

The Iranian government is preparing to impose self-restrictions on the production of highly enriched uranium. IAEA chief Rafael Grossi announced this on Tuesday. He proposed the move due to current tensions in the region, a senior diplomat said.

However, the possible self-restraint could depend on a resolution prepared for an IAEA steering committee meeting starting on Wednesday. The resolution could order Grossi to prepare a comprehensive report. This could then serve as preparation for the UN Security Council to deal with Iran’s nuclear program. If that happens, the Iranian government could increase its nuclear activities again or further complicate the International Atomic Energy Agency’s (IAEA) investigation.

60 percent uranium for warhead
According to experts, a nuclear explosion button requires about 50 kilograms of 60 percent uranium; for nuclear weapons this would have to be enriched to a level of 90 percent. Officially, the Iranian government says it is not pursuing a nuclear arsenal. Recently, however, some Iranian officials have spoken out about the possible departure.

There have been restrictions on the nuclear program since 2015. In return, Western sanctions were lifted. However, the US government withdrew from the agreement in 2018 under President Donald Trump. The Iranian government responded by, among other things, producing highly enriched uranium.

In recent months, the supply has increased to about 182 kilograms, it is said. According to Grossi, preparations were made over the weekend to ensure that this amount does not increase further. Details about the restrictions were not initially available. On Tuesday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that an attack in October had damaged part of Iran’s nuclear program.
