Gunter Mayr (52), head of department at the Ministry of Finance and professor of financial law at the University of Vienna, will become the new Minister of Finance of Austria. Mayr takes office on Wednesday.
Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen, who recently recovered from intervertebral disc surgery, will be sworn in. It is his first public appearance after being represented by Chancellor Karl Nehammer.
You can watch the swearing-in live from 9:20 am here:
After the swearing-in, the president will also receive a report on the status of the government negotiations between the ÖVP, SPÖ and NEOS that started on Monday.
Brunner has officially submitted his resignation
Mayr’s appointment was necessary because Magnus Brunner, Minister of Finance since December 2021, will take up his new position as EU Commissioner for Internal Security and Migration in Brussels in the coming weeks. In preparation for this task, Brunner officially submitted his resignation to Chancellor Nehammer on Tuesday.
“I am aware of a great responsibility”
Mayr after his appointment: “I am aware of the great responsibility that the office of Minister of Finance entails. Especially in challenging times like the ones we are currently experiencing, it is an honor for me to be entrusted with the management of the financial department, but it is also an expression of confidence in the expertise of the Austrian government and civil servants.”
Mayr has more than 20 years of experience in financial management
With University Prof. GDR. Gunter Mayr, Nehammer relies on a tax expert with more than 20 years of experience in financial administration. For the past 13 years he has been head of the Tax Policy and Tax Law section. Mayr, who holds a doctorate in law and business administration, completed his education at the University of Innsbruck before moving to the Ministry of Finance in 2003. Since 2009 he has taught financial law at the University of Vienna. Mayr is married and has two daughters.
