Although the FPÖ and ÖVP have started government negotiations, personnel issues are not currently a problem for the Greens or the KPÖ. The communists are pushing for a downsized government.
After the formation of the blue-black government, the opposition in the Styrian state parliament will present itself in a completely new constellation – for the first time with the SPÖ as the strongest faction. After the electoral defeat, the Greens lost half their seats and are now represented by only three people in the state parliament. There should be no changes in personnel; Sandra Krautwaschl received a unanimous vote of confidence at a board meeting after the elections.
The Greens fear cuts to social services
In an initial response to the Blue-Black government negotiations, the Green State spokeswoman was, as expected, critical: “In other states, Blue-Black stands for cuts in the social sector, attacks on culture and a reduction in transparency. The same scenario is now threatening in Styria.”
Critical words also come from Neos boss Niko-Swatek: “Whoever voted for black to avoid blue now gets the FPÖ. Styria is threatened with a big step back into the past.”
Don’t Let the State Government ‘Blow Up’
The KPÖ largely keeps a low profile. There will only be a substantive response once the Blau-Schwarz has a programme. Only so far ahead: it is hoped that the new state government will not be “inflated” to nine departments, but will instead be reduced to seven, according to the communists, who still hold two mandates in the state parliament.
