Hypo Vorarlberg maintains close business ties with the René Benkos Signa Group. The Greens are now calling on state leader Markus Wallner to finally provide clarification.
Hardly a day goes by without new revelations surrounding the bankrupt Signa Group case of real estate juggler René Benko, which has now become a criminal case. Whether it concerns possible cases of COVID financing fraud at Chalet N in Lech, suspected corruption in South Tyrol or the possible financial fiasco at Lamarr department store – Hypo was involved in all these projects. From a Vorarlberg perspective, the particularly burning question is how much money the Landesbank actually poured into the Tyrolean bubble empire.
“The governor cannot hide”
From the perspective of the Ländle Greens, it is primarily up to Governor Markus Wallner to shed light on the darkness: “The residents of Vorarlberg have the right to have their money handled with care. Wallner must take his responsibility as a representative of the owner and use all control options,” emphasize club chairman Daniel Zadra and control spokeswoman Eva Hammerer.
In the past, Wallner has repeatedly pointed out that operational matters were the sole responsibility of Hypo’s board of directors. However, Zadra is not satisfied with this: “The governor of the state cannot hide behind the administration, but must inform himself in detail about the situation: how much is the debt of the Signa empire to Hypo, how much has already been repaid and how much more will come? are the losses for the Vorarlbergers?”
The bank’s reputation is at stake
If Ländle-Hypo’s money were actually used to finance construction projects linked to criminal activities, it would be very damaging to the bank’s good reputation, which obviously cannot be in the interest of the owner, the double leadership of the Green Party. To force state leader Wallner to break his guard at least a little, the Greens submitted a parliamentary question on Friday morning, including an extensive list of questions.
