Hybrid warfare as video deepfake by a Russian intelligence service or bad satire with an actor? After the video call of the Viennese mayor Michael Ludwig (SPÖ) with the “wrong” Vitali Klitschko, many questions remain unanswered. A fact check of what is known so far:
The town hall was approached via email (mayor.kyiv@ukr.net) for an appointment with “Mayor Klitchko”. The ambassador in Kiev was informed in advance that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs would not be involved in the coordination.
Meanwhile, more details are coming out. Accordingly, the caller was demanding in terms of assistance and support to Ukrainian refugees. Therefore, the call would have ended after 20 minutes, according to Ludwig’s office.
Is it really decided now? City hall lawyers evaluate internally, state security is informed. Interior Minister Gerhard Karner (ÖVP) insists: “I ask the mayor for rapid, close and extensive cooperation with the State Security and Intelligence Directorate.”
Speaking of Kyiv. After the Russian rocket fire on the Ukrainian capital, the Federal Chancellery reported “images of the Kiev mayor’s office that had been checked by our intelligence services and confirmed to be authentic”. Chancellor Karl Nehammer (ÖVP) denounced the attack as “barbaric”.
