The Israeli army’s advance into the Syrian buffer zone on the Golan Heights has sparked international outrage. The UN reprimanded Israel for this, while Egypt said “the power vacuum in Syria was being exploited.”
Since the advance of Syrian rebel groups towards Damascus, Israel has sent more troops to the Golan region. There they eventually entered the demilitarized buffer zone and occupied it with, among other things, tank units.
“Israeli aggression in Syria”
The UN criticized the move, stressing that Israel is violating the agreement the two states made in 1974. Egypt spoke about Israel taking advantage of the current power vacuum in Syria to expand its territory.
The government in Cairo called on the United Nations to “take a clear position against Israeli aggression in Syria.” Qatar also said a “dangerous development” was observed here.
Netanyahu defends actions
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu defended the move. “No hostile power will be allowed to establish itself on our border,” the prime minister said in a TV speech. He declared that the buffer zone agreement with Syria, which had been in place for decades, was over.
Israel occupied most of Syria’s Golan Heights during the Six-Day War in 1967 and later annexed the areas. In 1974, the UN established a buffer zone between the Israeli-annexed and Syrian parts of the Golan Heights. UN peacekeepers are stationed there.
