Governor Hans Peter Doskozil (SPÖ) of Burgenland is back in public after being absent for several weeks due to illness. First, Doskozil had to undergo further surgery on his larynx and then developed pneumonia.
Due to the pneumonia, he was unable to speak at all for a while, he said during a background interview in Bad Tatzmannsdorf (Oberwart district) on Tuesday afternoon.
“Makes me think”
“I didn’t have a voice until last week,” and this situation “kind of made him think,” the governor said. So last Thursday he went to Leipzig again. His doctor removed the mucous membranes: “Then the voice came back and the training began. I am very optimistic that it will work again and that I will participate in question time in the state parliament tomorrow.”
“Glad I didn’t get depressed”
Asked whether he had thought about withdrawing in this situation, Doskozil said everyone would probably think about what this meant for their personal situation and their professional practice: “I’m glad I didn’t get depressed.”
The state governor explained his recovery process: First, an ossification was removed from his larynx in early November in the hospital in Leipzig, as he had done several times before. However, when he returned home, he developed pneumonia and, unlike previous interventions, was unable to undertake any vocal training. Only after the mucous membranes were removed could he talk again. “I’m happy to be back on board,” he said.
