Gewessler: “On schedule” – climate plan decided and sent to Brussels

Date:

The Ministry of Climate Protection has sent the final Austrian Climate Plan (NEKP) to the European Commission in Brussels and answered the questions. According to the ministry, the plan was approved on Tuesday by a circular resolution of the Council of Ministers and outlines Austria’s route to the 2030 climate target. The EU infringement procedure should now be closed.

“The national climate plan is our path to our climate goal. The final version shows once again: we are on course for a good climate and a secure future. A few years ago, some people dismissed our ambitions and goals as mere daydreams. Today it is clear: climate protection succeeds if you fight for it,” said Climate Protection Minister Leonore Gewessler (Greens).

Only a few changes have been made
According to the press release, the plan now submitted deviates only slightly from the plan from August this year. “Austria responded to the Commission’s questions and made technical changes and updates,” the report said. The goal of reducing emissions by 46 to 48 percent would already have been achieved in the plan submitted in August.

That is what the climate plan provides
With the comprehensive resolutions of the past five years and this plan, Austria is “now on track to achieve its climate target for the first time.” The climate plan provides for the abolition of climate counterproductive subsidies in the coming years, the continuation of efforts to replace heating systems and the enormous expansion of hydrogen production.

The EU targets are also binding for the next federal government. “With the transfer, Austria has now fulfilled its responsibility under EU law. A cessation of the steps taken regarding a possible breach of contract is to be expected,” the ministry said.
