The US military says it has killed a leader of the Islamic State (IS) terrorist militia in Syria. The man was killed in an attack in the east of the country, the US regional command said. In addition, another IS member was killed.
The attack took place in an area controlled by Syrian government forces and their allies until the fall of Syrian ruler Bashar al-Assad. The US will not allow IS to take advantage of the current situation in Syria, said the commander of US forces in the region, Erik Kurilla. The terrorist organization planned to free approximately 8,000 members currently in Syrian prisons. The army would crack down on it, it was said.
Although victory over Islamic State was declared in 2019, cells remain active in Syria. The US military is leading an international force in the fight against IS. They must remain in the country until further notice, even after the fall of Assad.
More American soldiers in Syria than expected
It recently emerged that there are more US troops stationed in the country than previously thought. Previously, the ministry had talked about 900 soldiers, now it should be about 2,000. Pentagon spokesman Pat Ryder said 900 of them were in Syria on long-term deployments of nine to 12 months each. The additional forces are troops stationed there for only one to three months.
The difference in the numbers was only now noticed internally, Ryder said. Longtime ruler Assad was overthrown on December 8 by a rebel alliance led by the Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham. The US has stationed about 2,500 soldiers in the fight against IS in Iraq.
