Women’s power – Iceland has the youngest female Prime Minister of all time

Date:

The 36-year-old social democrat Kristrún Frostadóttir will become the new Prime Minister of Iceland. This was announced by the chairman of the Social Democratic Alliance and the party leaders of its two future junior partners at the presentation of their coalition agreement in Reykjavik.

The leader of the Liberal Reform Party, Thorgerdur Katrín Gunnarsdóttir, will become foreign minister. Inga Sæland of the People’s Party takes over the social affairs and housing department. Frostadóttir is the youngest head of government in the country’s history, and the new government means that for the first time there are more women in the cabinet than men.

Coalition formed
In the future, Iceland will be governed by a coalition in the political center. In the past seven years, three other parties had formed a central government, ranging from the Left-Green Movement to the liberal-conservative Independence Party.

Due to differences of opinion on migration and energy issues, this constellation fell apart this autumn, leading to new elections.

Frostadóttir’s Social Democrats became the strongest force in the elections three weeks ago with 20.8 percent of the vote; they, like the Liberal Reform Party and the People’s Party, made strong gains. The three parties won a total of 36 of the 63 seats in the Icelandic parliament. The previous government parties, on the other hand, suffered heavy losses. The Left-Greens were even expelled from parliament.
