Bizarre: There is hardly any other way to summarize the conversation that AfD leader Alice Weidel had on his platform with X boss Elon Musk on Thursday evening. Germany was recommended to return to nuclear energy, Hitler was made a communist – in the end, not even God was spared…
“I think it is right to significantly increase the share of nuclear energy in Germany. That would be great,” Musk said in the public online conversation with AfD leader Alice Weidel on his platform . “It’s one of the craziest things I’ve ever seen,” the tech billionaire said. Nuclear energy is one of the best sources of electricity.
Germany stopped using nuclear energy in mid-April 2023. Now Weidel also spoke out strongly in favor of nuclear energy. She also gave roses to Musk’s ally Donald Trump and hoped the newly elected US president would end the war in Ukraine.
European politicians are not in a position to do this, the AfD’s top candidate for the federal elections said. Many people in Europe are rightly concerned because the conflict has a high risk of escalation. European governments have “no strategy” to end this war. “Yes, I think President Trump will resolve this conflict very quickly,” Musk said.
“Hitler was a communist”
In the course of the conversation, Weidel also called National Socialist Adolf Hitler a “communist”: “National Socialists were, as the word suggests, socialists. He was a communist and saw himself as a socialist.” Hitler nationalized companies and demanded high taxes. “And the greatest success after this terrible era in our history was to describe Adolf Hitler as right-wing and conservative,” the AfD leader said. “He was the exact opposite. He wasn’t a conservative, he wasn’t a libertarian. He was a communist, socialist man. Point.”
Weidel made another Hitler comparison in the context of internet regulation, saying, “You know what the first thing Adolf Hitler did was? He shut down freedom of speech, he controlled the media.”
In return, Musk reiterated his election recommendation for the AfD (see tweet). “People want change,” he said. “And that is why I recommend voting for the AfD. Only the AfD can save Germany, end of story,” he added.
“I’m not sure there is a God”
Ultimately, it was up to God himself: “I’m certainly open to the idea of God,” Musk said, but given the many evil things happening in the world, he wondered: base, it seems strange that very bad things are happening.” Weidel replied that she felt the same way as he did. “Honestly, I’m still searching. I don’t know what to believe.”
