The US Department of Justice wants to legally prosecute employees of regional and local authorities who refuse to cooperate with the mass deportation planned by new President Donald Trump.
This is evident from an internal memo published by American media on Wednesday. The US Department of Homeland Security is currently preparing targeted raids against undocumented migrants in several US cities.
However, there could be resistance to this from local authorities, especially in the communities that have declared themselves ‘places of refuge’ for migrants. The now publicized Justice Department memo states that state and local employees are prohibited by federal law from “resisting,” “obstructing” or otherwise failing to comply with immigration orders .
U.S. federal prosecutors and other department officials should investigate such possible “misconduct” for “possible criminal charges,” the report said.
“Millions and millions” will be deported
The memo was signed by Emil Bove, number three in the ministry. The position of head of department has not yet been filled. Pam Bondi, former attorney general of the state of Florida, who was nominated by Trump as attorney general, is still waiting for the necessary Senate approval to take over the office.
Trump announced during his inauguration on Monday that he would deport “millions and millions” of illegal immigrants. The right-wing populist’s goal, which was already announced during the election campaign, is to drastically reduce the number of approximately eleven million immigrants without residence documents in the US.
