Shortly after the new director of the American CIA, John Ratcliffe, took on, the assessment of his desk changed the origin of the COVID-19 virus. This now assumes a certain probability of a laboratory error, but remains careful in its formulation.
“On the basis of the available reports, the CIA assesses with little confidence that a research-related origin of the COVID-19 Pandemie is more likely than a natural origin,” said the CIA in a statement that was recognized by American media on Saturday. The origin of the virus is still being investigated.
The preparation of the assessment had already started during the presidency of Donald Trumps predecessor Joe Biden. According to media reports, this is not based on new findings, but rather on an assessment of existing information. Some American authorities still believe that the virus has probably been transmitted naturally, but others are not over yet or think it is a laboratory error.
Ratcliffe has just been sworn
The CIA had previously taken the position that there was insufficient information to assess whether the virus was crossed from an animal to a human – or was caused by a malfunction in a Chinese laboratory. Ratcliffe, on the other hand, had advocated the laboratory theory in the past and accused Beijing of it to hide the origin of the virus.
During the first term of office of the Republican Trump, the former congressman from Texas worked as an intelligence coordinator, but only about seven months. At the time, the Democrats accused Ratcliffe, among other things, of abuse of his position for political purposes. He was sworn in on Thursday. The son of US President Trump, Don Jr., praised the decision about the X platform.
The government of Biden did not want to bind for a long time
There is disagreement among the American intelligence services about the origin of the virus. The US government under Trumps Democratic predecessor Biden repeatedly emphasized that there was still no uniform vision within the government about the origin of the Coronavirus. Trump, on the other hand, is convinced that the virus was caused by a failure in a laboratory in the Chinese city of Wuhan. China has always rejected the allegations of a possible laboratory accident.
