The plans of US President Donald Trump, the United States, must be included by Greenland, lead to measures on the largest island in the world: foreign and anonymous donations to parties and politicians are prohibited. The Parliament voted for a corresponding bill, as the Danish news agency Ritzau reported.
The new law is to protect “the political integrity of Greenland”. Trump had shown interest in Greenland several times in recent weeks – it should belong to the United States.
With the amendment to the law, the election campaign is prevented from being disturbed with foreign or anonymous donations. People who donate more than 1000 Danish crowns must reveal their identity. Donations of the Danish parliament and the Danish sister parties remain allowed.
New elections Half March
In addition, a new parliament must be elected on 11 March. This was presented on Tuesday by Prime Minister Mute Eggede. It is expected that the election campaign for the independence efforts of the island of Denmark, the development of the economy and the relationships with Denmark and the US will run. “We are in the middle of a serious time. A time that we have never experienced in our country. This is not the time for internal departments, “Eggede wrote on social media. Parliament must agree with the election date.
Trump does not exclude military agents
It was only last December that Trump had confirmed his wish to take control of the strategically important island. He also had not excluded the use of military or economic means. The Semi -Autonomous territory announced that it was open to similarities, but did not want to become part of the United States.
Denmark has been in control of the island for centuries. Until 1953, Greenland was a Danish colony and has since reached extensive autonomy. This also includes the right to explain independence. A majority of the Grölanders would vote for independence according to a recent study by the Verian Opinion Research Institute.
The island has huge undeveloped mineral resources. The economy depends on fishing and subsidies from Denmark.
