The White House announced a “prisoners exchange” with Russia on Tuesday. As part of the agreement, an American has been released for years because of drug smuggling.
The special envoy of the US for the Midden -Oost, Steve Witkoff, Verlasse The Russian airspace together with Marc Fogel, shared the White House. Fogel was arrested at an airport of Moscow in 2021 and was later sentenced to a prison for drug smuggling. Fogel had worked as a teacher in Russia for years.
“Sign of Good Will” in Moscow
US President Donald Trump, Witkoff and other consultants had negotiated an “exchange” with Moscow, which is a “sign of goodwill” on the part of the Russians, according to the White House. This is considered “a sign that we are moving in the right direction to end the brutal and terrible war in Ukraine”. Washington did not give any further details.
First high -rise trip to Russia since November 2021
According to the “New York Times”, Witkoff had traveled to Moscow with a private jet. Accordingly, it is the first known trip from a high -ranking American officer to Moscow since November 2021, a few months before the start of the Russian attack war in Ukraine. The then CIA director Bill Burns was at the time for discussions in Russia.
