The Dutch government coalition led by independent Prime Minister Dick Schoof shows the first serious cracks in the EU defense policy. With a narrow majority, the Parliament in The Hague rejected the controversial EUupgrade plan on Wednesday.
The EU government heads, including Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof, had approved the billion plan last week. But now the MPs of three of the four coalition parties also voted. This also includes the radical right PVV of the right -wing populist Geert Wilders.
The most important criticism of the parties is to increase the possible financing by government debt.
Wilders also against it
Wilders explained in The Hague that the non -party Prime Minister Schoof would now have to withdraw his approval in Brussels. “This is how it should be in a democracy,” he said. The defense question therefore continues to split the already unstable right -wing government of the country.
The right-wing liberal VVD — The party of the NATO-Secretary General Mark Rutte support today of the EU plan. It would be “irresponsible” if the Netherlands would now withdraw its support, VVD MP said. The government only wants to respond at a later date.
